Before the Proud Boys, The Oath Keepers, The 3 Percenters and before Donald Trump, there were The Order, The Posse Comitatus, The KKK, Identity Christianity, the Timothy McVeighs of the world, and countless survivalist, militia and religious extremist groups vowing to destroy the country. Where did they come from? Why do they hate government, the rule of law, progressive thought, and everything "woke". Why do many of them believe the answers to civilizations problems lie in the Christian Bible, a book written a thousand years ago? Vincent Coppola spent months among these people in the late 80's and 90's, listening to their stories, living in their survivalist compounds, sometimes staring down the barrel of a gun to get the interviews. He hears their diatribes and insane rantings. He listens and records the bible verses they cling to to justify the violence, the hatred that consumes their lives. He gives them the opportunity to voice beliefs that will scare the hell out of any sane person. These voices from that time are so loud that they have reverberated through the decades to inform the insurrectionists and apocalyptic "patriots" of today, 2022, whose sole purpose, it seems, is to overthrow the law and order of civilization, and replace it with....????? The author is an amazing writer, with insight into the human condition that will paint a picture so vivid it will both delight, inform but, in the end, frighten you into understanding the danger from within America faces in the 21st Century. I wish the author would write a sequel and explore the right-wing groups and politics of today. If you care about America, this book is a must read!
